At the beginning of the lockdown, I noticed that many more people were spending time in their gardens, listening to birds and looking at plants and just taking more time to appreciate the Nature around them. I wanted to create some videos to help those spending more time outdoors, to identify what they are both hearing and seeing. The first video looks at the birds and flowers in spring time, and every post will be linked to a video.
Although we can’t actually do much rambling at the moment, the idea of this video and text is to help people who are in lock-down to spend a bit of time listening to the birds, looking at wild flowers and being able to recognise some of the insects that appear as spring turns to summer. It might be helpful for those folk who can’t leave the house or garden or venture very far in their daily exercise. Starting with just a few birds and plants, we will progress as the summer advances so that as new species arrive or emerge you may be able to recognise them and learn a bit more about them. Week 1 (mid-April) includes blackbird, song thrush, the rooks and their friends, as well as some birds which generally are only seen in summer. There are also a few plants which are in flower now – which makes identifying them easier than waiting until all sorts of others are also in flower! I hope you enjoy it – the natural world is not affected by this particular virus (although some birds especially do suffer their own viruses) and so now is a great time to take some time out from this difficult time and enjoy what is all around us.
